Session is the highlight of the SYP calendar year. It is always held the last week of December in
Regina (December 26-31). What makes this event so special is the fact that we debate in the actual
Saskatchewan Legislature. SYP has a unique relationship with the provincial government, which allows
us access to this historic building for our debates. During Session, we have hotel accommodations, a
formal banquet with the Lieutenant Governor, and a substantial amount of time in House.
The Session schedule is full and fast-paced, but the friends you meet and the fun you have make up
for the long nights.
At Session, we debate a wide range of issues from health care and nuclear energy to post-secondary
education. The food at the event is always excellent and includes a turkey dinner one evening. Best
of all, members get to debate in the real legislature. Debating in the legislature is a truly unique
priviledge offered to only a few youth parliaments in Canada. Not to mention, most members will
agree there is just something special about holding a model parliament in the actual legislature.
At Session, the members of SYP elect a cabinet to run the organization for the next year. Aside from
getting to sit in the front row seats at the next Session, eveyone on cabinet has an essential duty with
regards to the running of SYP. Some cabinet ministers plan events while others help raise funds to keep
event costs low. Cabinet ministers can help with transportation to the events, as well as finding funding
so everyone can participate. Just like the real government cabinet, SYP cabinet ministers work hard
to help make this organization run smoothly.
